Munira’s parents came to work in Madanpur Khadar J.J. Colony when she was two-years-old.  

She is from a rag picking family with five kids. Munira’s elder sister is mentally challenged.  Both her parents are rag pickers and go to work.  Munira could not go to school as she had to look after her elder sister and latter younger ones.  

The volunteers met Munira during the girls’ enrolment week and convinced her parents to send her to school.  Munira is now seven-years-old and could get admission to school thanks to Right to Education (RTE) Act.

The Girl Enrolment Week is celebrated by Empowerment for Rehabilitation, Academic and Health (EFRAH) with the support from Oxfam India. The objective is to reach out to the girls who are drop-out or never went to the schools; to support them in enrolment in formal education system.

Girls living in this colony face a list of obstacles to get education. The enrolment week is catered to addressing these problems.

Girls are not being able to go to the schools even if they want to, due to family pressure and also have to take care of the younger ones at home while the parents are away for work. 

They are also problems like financial crunch after class 9, eve teasing and molestation while travelling to school.

Oxfam India and EFRAH have been successful in imparting awareness about the importance of education for the children through a street play and children rally with poster demonstration.

Next we plan to have more awareness sessions in the community especially among the rag-pickers.

Girl education is necessary and important for the growth of the families and also for the growth of the nation.
