In India, costly health care pushes millions below poverty line every year, and denies care to many who are already poor.
Oxfam India has been part of a nationwide process working towards improvements in the delivery of public health services. This is being achieved by improving space for the communities’ role in monitoring government initiatives like the National Health Mission (NHM) and making government health services accountable.
Oxfam India works with other civil society organisations and Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA), the Indian chapter of the People's Health Movement (PHM), at state and national level.
We endeavour to bring about larger policy reforms and better programme implementation through a call for greater accountability of the state and greater investments through regular budget tracking.
Through our work in the states across the country, we demand inclusion of the most marginalised in the delivery of quality health care services.
The burden of morbidity and mortality disproportionally falls on the poor and the marginalized. We believe that significant reduction of this burden is possible just by streamlining the governance system in health sector.
This in turn requires a focused health policy, backed by adequate financial provisions.
We campaign for progressive taxation to generate public funds for healthcare; generate evidence on and highlight health issues; and advocate for the regulation of the private healthcare sector.
