Equal Rights and Dignity for Women
The Gender Justice programme of Oxfam India broadly covers violence against women and pushes for their political empowerment. Our aim is to gradually eliminate the social acceptance of violence against women through policy and practices, and simultaneously bringing a change in social beliefs and systems that propagate violence.
ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS
Violence against women and girls continues to be one of the most prevalent and least recognised human rights violations in the world. In India, this occurs in many forms- domestic violence, sexual assault, public humiliation, abuse, trafcking and honor killing. Oxfam India under its Gender Justice theme has been addressing the issue of violence against women in six states of the country viz. Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand through various programmes and campaigns.

16 days of activisim
Taking cue from global campaigns, Oxfam India conducted '16 days of Activism' in 2014-15, focusing on violence at homes, emphasizing on intimate partner violence, sex selective abortion, dowry, child marriage and human trafficking. This campaign effectively reached out to 1,00,000 people via online and on-ground activities.
Oxfam India with Foundation for Education and Economic Development (FEED) organised a seminar titled DEVELOPING UNDERSTANDING ABOUT PERSPECTIVE OF MUSLIM WOMEN ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE on December 2, 2014.
Mahila Samakhya with Oxfam India organised awareness programmes on Domestic Violence with Dalit and marginalised women in Uttar Pradesh from December 1 to 8, 2014.
21 episodes on All India Radio and 8 episodes on Doordarshan aired 16 Days of Activism campaign in Odisha.
Facebook page Voice Up took the EVAWG movement in Uttar Pradesh on social media
Street plays were organised by Sanjha Manch with the help of our partners Arpan and Vimarsh, reaching out to 10,339 women and 5,820 men of Uttrakhand during 16 Days of Activism.
400 men and women participated in the Solidarity Walk to mark the International Day for elimination of violence against women on November 25, 2014 in Odisha.
The Bhumika Tele Helpline set up for women in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to register cases of domestic violence.
Cycle Yatra organised in 16 project villages of Gariyaband, Chhattisgarh and Kala Jattha in 10 project villages in Mahasamand, Chhattisgarh in November and December, 2014 on issues around violence against women.
Transformative Leadership of Women's Rights
The persistent under-representation of women in political life and decision making has led to a 'democratic deficit' in India. The discrimination women face prevents them from demonstrating their full potential and excludes them from benefiting equally from developmental process.
ONCE POWERLESS, KAMLA IS NOW A LEADING LIGHT.
38-year-old Kamla, of Khamari Kulethi village in Nainital worked as a labourer to make ends meet. Her family made not more than 11,000 a year. It was when Vimarsh, Oxfam India's partner, intervened in her district, Kamla saw her life changing for the better. Getting a BPL card issued was just a beginnig With Vimarsh's consistent support, Kamla was able to actively participate in Gram Sabha meetings and protest against fewer employment opportunities and low distribution of wages to women under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA). Today, Kamla is the elected Pradhan of her village committed towards its development.
