Assam Drowns Again

Every year, Assam is ravaged by floods. Lakhs are displaced and many lose their lives. The intensity of floods has increased in the last few decades. This year alone, more than 33.5 lakh people have been affected and 157 people have died.
People are still struggling. Fresh floods on 1st October have made it even worse for people to cope with this disaster. It is not easy to re-build livelihood and homes year after year and lose everything, every time a disaster strikes. But people in Assam have not given up and nor have we.
Oxfam responded to Assam within 2 days post floods. Our team is tirelessly working on the ground to help people recover from this disaster and receive rehabilitation. We are and will continue to provide immediate and long-term relief to every child, woman and man in need.
THE CRISIS
People are facing a huge crisis. They have no roof over their head nor food or even clean drinking water.
Many defecate, wash clothes and drink from the same river. Thousands of children and women are facing health issues due to the consumption of such contaminated water.
Families have lost their source of income and children are unable to attend school.
For the past two months, we have helped over 48,000 people in Assam, thanks to monthly support from people like you. Survivors have received hygiene kits and shelter kits which contain water purification tablets, soaps, tarpaulin, water filter, blankets etc.
OXFAM RESPONDS
Nearly 7,000 shelter and hygiene kit have been distributed to affected families for immediate relief.
Over three lakh NADCC tablets have been provided to purify water.
We installed eight water filters, four tube wells, 12 temporary toilets and eight hand pumps. We also chlorinated and rehabilitated over 150 hand pumps in the worst affected districts of Assam.
We are even providing cleanliness and public health promotion activities for people to live healthier lives and eliminate diseases. We have also conducted menstruation health management workshops for over 1000 women and girls in Assam.
Lakhs of people are still in need of immediate and long-term support. The fresh floods have affected over 78,000 more lives. People cannot recover from disaster, rehabilitate or re-build livelihood in a day. Immediate relief helps people get essential material to survive the floods but the construction of basic facilities, workshops, counselling and rehabilitation helps them to build a better life. Thus, it takes a long time for people to get back on their feet. Your monthly support will go a long way in rehabilitating flood affected people in not only Assam but in other flood affected states like Bihar, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
